Shawn Martin
Technical Director Plumbing Manufacturers Institute
Shawn Martin has over 10 years of experience leading and managing product development, research, and testing programs, particularly in the fields of fluid dynamics and residential building technologies. He is currently the Technical Director for the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute (PMI), joining the organization in July, 2007.
At PMI, Shawn is responsible for managing and administering technical activities and programs for the member companies producing plumbing fixtures. This includes involvement with and participation in a range of green building and water efficiency programs such as WaterSense, the National Green Building Standard, and LEED-H. In particular, Shawn is a consensus committee member of the ANSI-accredited National Green Building Standard, currently under development.
Prior to his work at PMI, Shawn managed the applied field research of the NAHB Research Center as the Director of the Technology Division. He had primary responsibility for housing technology research conducted through the federal Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH), and disseminating the results to builders and homeowners through the web. Research conducted by Shawn and his team included the study of the water efficiency, conducted using a variety of methods including field monitoring of occupied homes, laboratory studies, computer modeling, and technology scanning. Shawn and his team developed and released a number of water-efficient technology summaries and best practice guides, including the PEX Design Guide, developed with the Plastic Pipe Institute.
Shawn holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Grove City College. His Master’s degree research and thesis focused on the interaction of acoustics on fluid flow.
